Finding the sweet spot between underground intention and supple mainstream sizzlers, the debut EP, “Kite”, from quickly rising New York-based artist and DJ Lumia is a riotous and riveting affair. Vocally sharp yet saccharine, her ear for hook-worthy pop melodies and snappy production picks is apparent throughout the three-pronged project. Ilario Alicante – “Vacaciones En Chile”
This Ilario Alicante track is incredible. The arrangement of the song is unique for a dance track, and the build is executed perfectly.
Julie London – “No Moon At All”
Julie London is one of my favourite artists. I’m inspired by her melodic vocals and the subject matter of her songs. If you’ve ever heard the terminology “Cry Me A River,” she was the icon that popularized it in 1955. I think it’s really cool that we still use this phrase today.
Michael Bibi – “Whispers In The Wind”
Besides this Bibi track being a great listen, I am also drawn to the concept behind it: using a poem in a house track. The sample is from a Yoko Ono song in which she sings a poem from the 1940’s called “Who Has Seen The Wind.” This poem carries a message that I am especially moved by, and Bibi samples its core message:
“Who has seen the wind?
Neither you nor I:
But when the trees bow down their heads,
The wind is passing by.”
No Doubt – “I’m Just A Girl”
I’m particularly interested in working with female vocals when producing. This track puts me in the headspace of being a girl and creating from my own experience.
Andrew Salmon, Nick Edwards – “Slaves of the Rhythm”
There is a really interesting melodic experience that all of the elements in this song create. I like the sound choices for every instrument in this track, which I find rare.
Edvard Grieg, Berliner Philharmoniker, Herbert von Karajan
– “Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Op. 46: I. Morning Mood”
I am heavily inspired by classical music. This is a true masterpiece. It is, indeed, a morning mood.
deadmau5, Kaskade – “I Remember”
Forever iconic, this track is one of the blueprints for dance music today. I can’t imagine what it would be like to poses the level of genius that deadmau5 and Kaskade have. This track withstands the test of time.
The Mills Brothers – “You Always Hurt The One You Love”
Aside from the heart-wrenching experience of listening to this banger, I am very lyrically inspired by the oldies.
Lady Gaga – “Vanish Into You”
One of the greatest artists of our time, if not the greatest. She is a major force, and I am consistently inspired by not only her musical talent, but her power as a female artist. Being Italian and from New York (I am too) is just a cherry on top. She has broken numerous world records. My favourite recent achievement of hers is having the highest-attended concert by a female artist in the history of time.
Shakira – “She Wolf”
I don’t think I have to explain this one.
