Madonna outdoes herself, Jorja Smith announces her new album with the help of Wizkid, and SIENNA SPIRO confirms the hype: it’s a bumper Wonderlist!
Madonna – “Danceteria”
Sequels are so often disappointing, but with CONFESSIONS II, the iconic Madonna has pulled off something remarkable. Her new album augments her canon, enhances her boundless reputation, and is an absolute dancefloor gem. “Danceteria” is emblematic of everything good about the album – playful, euphoric, meticulous.
Jorja Smith ft. Wizkid – “Alive”
It feels like Jorja Smith is about to drop the album of the summer. The flawless Walsall-born singer-songwriter has just announced that her third studio album, What Are The Odds, will be shared on 21st August via FAMM. She’ll share the record on the same day as her co-headline performance at All Points East alongside Tems. We’ve been blessed with a radiant, mind-bogglingly sensual new single too, “Alive” featuring Nigerian goat Wizkid.
SIENNA SPIRO – “Great Expectation”
One of the most impactful new artists to come out of Britain in the past year or two, SIENNA SPIRO confirms the hype is justified with her wonderful debut album, Visitor. It’s startlingly mature and considered for a debut, featuring some of the best soulful pop ballads you’ll here all year. “Great Expectation” is particularly excellent.
J Hus – “Moonlight / Clean Run”
UK rap frontrunner J Hus is bang in form across his new double-sided single, “Moonlight / Clean Run”. It’s classic Hus, with an effortless osmosis of smooth vocals, sharp rapping and piercing lyricism, atop progressive and potent musical backdrops. Still one of London’s essential talents.
Wolf Alice – “Gospel Oak”
A gorgeous leftover from their No.1 album from last summer The Clearing, Wonderland cover star Ellie Rowsell and Wolf Alice once again mesmerise with a tender piano ballad “Gospel Oak”. It comes alongside the announcement of The Clearing: B Sides on the one year anniversary of its original release next month, and just days before that huge homecoming show at Finsbury Park this Sunday.
Antony Szmierek ft. Los Bitchos – “Seminal”
Manchester-born poet, writer and producer Antony Szmierek morphs the mundane into a bassy, sun-spilt transcendent track on “Seminal”, a euphoric blend of UK garage, spoken word and shimmering electronica. Featuring Los Bitchos’ Serra Petale, the track pairs rave-ready rhythms with Szmierek’s introspective lyricism, exploring the fine line between perception and truth – an exhilarating preview of what’s to come on his forthcoming sophomore album Decoding Birdsong.
Moses Boyd – “Say Yeah”
South East London-raised singer-songwriter Moses Boyd is back from his five-year hiatus and wants you to “Say Yeah” with this upbeat rejoice. Inspired by the likes of gospel artists Fred Hammond and Kirk Franklin, this is a jazz and funk-fused melody that swirls with light and joy. With its catchy choir-led refrain sung harmoniously, it becomes a much-needed mantra.
Westside Cowboy – “Pin Up Boys”
Manchester’s Westside Cowboy are rightfully being called the next big band, and each passing release makes the label more and more apropos. “Pin Up Boys” is the latest teasing single from their forthcoming debut album, It Goes On, due 21st August. Already a live staple, the track is raw, rousing and emotionally electric, one of their best tunes to date.
Naisha f.t. Ty Dolla $ign – “So then”
Rising star Naisha is here with her first single, “So Then,” featuring Ty Dolla $ign, accompanied by a visualiser ahead of the release of her debut EP “911” produced alongside longtime collaborators Skrillex and Dilip Venkatesh. With comparisons to PinkPantheress for her dreamy, genre-blurring sound, Naisha is definitely one to watch.
Truman Sinclair – “4th of july”
Look forward to the “4th of july” with this country-twangled jingle by Chicago-hailing musician Truman Sinclair. Written, produced and played by Truman solely, it takes the shape of a love letter that feels like it can be universally applied, but the most prominent lyrics ring true: “Stay, stay, stay, stay, stay.” This feels like a summer staple track, brimming with whimsy and wistfulness.
Sam Akpro – “Dusty”
Peckham-born artist Sam Akpro is shaking off the “Dusty” feeling with this new lo-fi track. Oscillating between hope and despair, with perceptive panning and foreboding synths, Sam’s soothing, almost whisper-like vocals glint its jagged rhythm. It’s an immersive and expansive chronicle of Sam’s grapple with addiction, poignant and full of purpose.
KhakiKid ft. Chameleon – “Easy Does It”
“Easy Does It” for Dublin-hailing wonderkid KhakiKid. This is a fun track in a Mac Miller-meets-Two Door Cinema Club way — pacey, witty, and head-bumping. Beginning as a collection of voice notes while cycling through his hometown, the result is an upbeat, destined-for-the-moshers track that seesaws between unpredictability and humour — and the charm in both.
Adult DVD – “Cowboy On Aisle Three”
After playing huge crowds at Glastonbury, Leeds-based sextet Adult DVD released their new single “Cowboy On Aisle Three”. The track comes ahead of the release of their self-titled debut album, which sees the pushing their witty observational songwriting based on real-life characters and a pulsating synth-punk sound that works for both the rave and the mosh pit.
Maverick Sabre – “Eleven”
Headlining a show in Brixton in September, soul favourite Maverick Sabre returns to the spotlight with his new single “Eleven”. A very smooth, smoky track, he talks about life’s growing responsibilities as old feelings start to come up, navigating desire and friendship.
JGrrey – “pedigrree”
South London soulstress JGrrey is getting down to the nitty-gritty with “pedigrree”. On this surprisingly sultry track, catch JGrrey between sass and conviction, as she comments on feeling alienated and excluded, sprinkling in some social commentary. Jazzy and soulful, it feels like a spoken song you’d catch in an alluring speakeasy, but leave with a note-stained napkin.
Tommy Barlow – “Won’t You Ever Need Me”
Tommy Barlow leans further into emotional freefall on “Won’t You Ever Need Me”, a slow-burning cut that erupts from sparse piano and drums into a towering wall of fractured noise. First sketched as an iPhone recording at his family home in Cambridge before being rebuilt in his Turnpike Lane studio, the track balances folk-rooted intimacy with something far more expansive. Equal parts devastating and cathartic, it’s the kind of song that makes dancing through heartbreak feel strangely possible.
Yung Singh – “Tabla Trouble”
Yung Singh closes his “Bloom” EP with “Tabla Trouble”, a mesmerising collision of Indian classical tradition and forward-thinking club production. Built around the hypnotic pulse of the tabla, the track layers saturated strings, fluttering flutes and ghostly vocals into something that feels both venerable and futuristic. Rich in texture and impossible to define, it’s a dynamic, boundary-blurring statement that proves Yung Singh is just as interested in building worlds as he is filling dancefloors.
