There’s nothing quite so exciting than when a new brand comes to the fore, after years of leading the charge for the big wigs. Such is the case for Biver, a father-and-son duo led by Jean-Claude (an icon in modern watchmaking) and Pierre Biver.

Over the past year, this horological family has been putting their own stamp on watches, combining mastery and design. Following the success of a knock-out Carillon Tourbillon Minute Repeater (translation: a very complicated watch to make, with techniques that go beyond telling the time), the duo are back with a new chapter in their short history.

Drum roll, please. Introducing the Biver Automatique, putting the spotlight on the art of simplicity with a three-hand (hours, minutes, second) approach to automatic watches built for the everyday.

“A watch showing just the hours, minutes, and seconds is the most essential form of our art. Distilling complexity down to its purest, simplest incarnation can be its own kind of masterpiece, found in its absolute perfection and discipline,” says co-founder Jean-Claude Biver. “If you want to play the piano, you must first master scales and classical music before you can learn to play jazz.”

Contrary to the watch that launched their vision into the world, it’s paired down to the most basic functions: telling the time. But don’t be deceived by such acts of clarity. Built in solid 18k white and rose gold dials, in a case corresponding to the colour of the metal. With a two-tone finish that adds to the depth, gold markers reveal the hours, with the emphatic Biver family name imprinted at 12 o’clock. Complete with an all new movement, named after the horological icon Jean-Claude Biver (who adds Hublot and TAG Heuer to his CV) with the JCB-003, as a tribute to creating their own movement architecture.

And in the addition of keeping fans on their toes, hard stone dials – a signature to a Biver watch, debuted in their first model – will be produced in limited quantities of the Automatique, dubbed the Atelier Series. Fair to say, we’re Automatiquely obsessed.
