The brain child of writers Neil Garguilo & Gregory Jenkins, White Collar Prison is a 26 track musical that depicts the life of one of America’s most loved anti-heroes, the white collar criminal. Looking at the news and the last 4 years of celebrity drama and political upheaval, the comedy duo created a fictitious congressman from New York’s 33rd district who gets his first major slap on the wrist.
A full length parody musical, White Collar Prison tells the tale of a corrupt congressman Richard Dutch who finally tastes the karmic wheel of justice when he is sentenced to jail for everything from embezzlement, insider trading, corruption and a whole slew of things that the American public knows all too well. Synergistically aligning with current events, the 26 song album goes through the entirety of how the US system is inherently flawed despite being one of the greatest democratic institutions to have ever existed. From elected judges, to off-shore banking, the comedy team made sure the cat was well out of the bag on how the inner workings of high-society’s criminal syndicates operate and ultimately how their punishments sound more like a holiday than anything.
Tapping into the prison genre, Neil & Gregory use all the lines and classic prison jokes we are used to with a fabulous twist of whimsical parody. Rich man walking, our favorit scene, where the congressman is assigned to his cell, reveals a group of former actors and off-shore account enthusiasts who are all but stoked to be behind bars and away from the media light. “Now I’m writing deals off on force majeure” , “OH boy welcome to jail” , “This is what you get when you’re well connected”, reinforce the truth behind the white collar prison system. Accompanied by inmates Lucas Garbeel, Charlie Marie, Ryan Stout and Mary Birdsong the gang live out their prison adventure, by revealing to audiences what the jesters take on the situation.
Throughout the development of the musical, they focused on balancing humour with a strong underlying message. They sought to create characters and scenarios that were exaggerated enough to provoke laughter, yet grounded in reality to ensure the audience could recognize the truths being portrayed. Their ultimate goal is to create a piece that not only entertains but also prompts viewers to think critically about the justice system and the societal privileges that often shield white-collar criminals from appropriate punishment.
